Faith and the Homestead

How I want to grow our faith with our homestead.

First off I am a Christian. When I started this blog I wasn’t sure I wanted to bring my faith into it. Please understand this is not because I’m ashamed of my faith. Its due to the simple fact that I don’t think I’m a great Christian. To be honest, sometimes I don’t even think I’m a good Christian. Up until a month ago I did not own a “grown up” bible. I had one of those teenage, easy to understand bibles from 20 years ago. However, my family has been embracing our faith more and more. I also realized that my faith is part of this driving force to slow down, enjoy my family more, and eat nutritious so I can fuel my body the way God intended.

My parents have a cabin in Potter County, PA. This cabin is nestled down in the valley, in the middle of nowhere with a creek running along the back side of the property. When I go up with my family I like to get up before everyone else so I can sit in the darkness and the stillness and hear the gentle sounds of the creek in the background. Just thinking about it takes me to that place. I truly think I feel closer to God in those moments than any other time. The sounds of nature calm me and I know He designed it all so perfectly. This is the type of life I want to create on a daily basis.

I’m not sure when the time comes that we will be able to find a house with a creek on the property. I do hope though, to find a house with a covered porch where we can sit and listen to the rain come down. To find a house with some land where I can plant a garden and provide food for my family. I hope to create a home that invites family and friends in with the smell of warm bread in the oven. A home that our son will always want to come back to.

This is my dream. This is how I believe God wants me and my family to live. A slower life. To grow closer together as a family. To plant and harvest food for ourselves. I believe God needs to be the center of that life. I am not a great Christian. I’m not even sure I’m a good Christian but I’m going to keep striving to make God the center of our homestead. To praise him in the good times and have faith in the bad times.

I encourage you all to put God at the center of your home. Its not too late to start.
